ZAMBOANGA CITY – This city remains under the red zone classification after cases of African swine fever (ASF) continue to increase.

Data released Monday by the Office of the City Veterinarian (OCVet) showed that the hog mortalities due to ASF have reached 4,365.

“The number of barangays hit by ASF remain at 34 out of the 98 barangays,” Dr. Mario Arriola, OCVet chief, said in a statement released by the City Hall Information Office.

The number of hog raisers severely affected rose to 1,053. ASF infection in the city was detected last May.

The district of Vitali, which logged the highest mortalities, has also the highest number of hog raisers affected by ASF at 322.

Meanwhile, the OCVet in collaboration with the City Social Welfare and Development Office continue distribution of food assistance to affected hog raisers through the Assistance in Crisis Situation program.

Arriola said they also sustain border control, quarantine checkpoints and information campaign against ASF. (PNA)
