Paeng damage to agri, infra in Pangasinan, La Union hits P8.8M

MALASIQUI, Pangasinan – Severe Tropical Storm Paeng has left a total of PHP4.8 million in damage to agriculture, infrastructure, and livestock in the province of Pangasinan, and over PHP4 million in damage to agriculture in La Union province as of Nov. 2.
 
In a phone interview on Wednesday, Patrick Aquino, Pangasinan Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) operations supervisor, said the reported damage to agriculture alone so far amounted to PHP1.6 million.
 
“Most of the affected are mango trees due to the strong winds, the fruits fell on the ground,” he said.
 
Aquino said damage to infrastructure, mostly roads, amounted to PHP2.5 million.
 
He said livestock in the province affected by the typhoon amounted to PHP685,850.
 
Meanwhile, at least 702 individuals evacuated due to flooding in their areas during the onslaught of Paeng have already returned to their houses.
 
Aquino said these individuals were from the towns of Bani, Lingayen, and Bolinao, and Alaminos City.
 
In a separate phone interview, La Union PDRRMO staff Pau Navarro said the estimated total cost of damage to agriculture in La Union reached over PHP4 million, specifically in the municipalities of Rosario, Santo Tomas, Agoo, Bacnotan, San Gabriel, Tubao, and Aringay.
 
She said a total of 360 houses have been reportedly damaged.
 
“Of which, 351 were partially damaged and nine were totally damaged houses,” she added.
 
Navarro said 388 families or 1,222 individuals in 87 barangays in the towns of Rosario, Pugo, Caba, Bauang, Agoo, Aringay, Santo Tomas, and Luna, and city of San Fernando were affected due to the weather disturbance.
 
“A total of PHP36,377 cost of assistance were provided from the local government units, barangays, and other non-government organizations,” she said.
 
There were no reported casualties in the two provinces during the onslaught of Paeng.
 
The severe tropical storm has brought strong winds and rains in the Ilocos Region from Saturday to Monday morning. (PNA)
