ZAMBOANGA CITY – The Office of the City Veterinarian (OCVet) said it continues to strengthen border control measures as cases of African swine fever (ASF) continue to increase.

Dr. Mario Arriola, OCVet chief, said Monday the hog mortalities brought about by ASF infection have reached 4,646.

Border control measures, Arriola said, include quarantine checkpoints and public advocacy campaign against ASF.

“The number of hog raisers affected totaled 1,091,” Arriola said.

The city remains under the red zone classification since the ASF infection was detected last May.

Arriola said the number of hogs culled have reached 1,053 across 34 barangays that were hit by ASF.

He said the Tumaga veterinary district has the highest number of affected barangays with nine.

OCVet records show that Vitali veterinary district logged the highest hog mortalities with 1,547 and highest number of affected hog raisers with 322.

Meanwhile, the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) said it has partnered with OCVet to provide financial and food assistance to the affected hog raisers through the agency's Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation program.

Arriola said the affected hog raisers received financial assistance of PHP2,500 for each hog mortality. (PNA)
