MANILA – A magnitude 5 earthquake jolted Cagayan on Monday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

In a bulletin issued at 2:34 p.m., Phivolcs said the tectonic quake struck 11 km. southwest of Dalupiri Island at 1:34 p.m.

It was 14 km. deep.

Intensity V was felt in Calayan, Cagayan, and Intensity IV in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte.

Intensity III was reported in Luna, Apayao; Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte, and Intensity II in Lal-lo, Buguey, Lasam and Peñablanca, Cagayan.

Phivolcs, meanwhile, logged the following instrumental intensities:

Intensity III - Claveria, Cagayan; Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte
Intensity II - Peñablanca, Cagayan; Laoag City, Ilocos Norte
Intensity I - Gonzaga, Cagayan; Batac City, Ilocos Norte; Sinait, Ilocos Sur

Reported intensity is the traditional way of knowing the intensity based on reports of people who felt the earthquake while instrumental intensity is measured using an intensity meter that measures ground acceleration.

Aftershocks are likely but damage is not expected from the magnitude 5 quake, Phivolcs said. (PNA)
