Paeng damage to agri, infra nears P9 billion: NDRRMC

MANILA – The estimated cost of damage caused by Severe Tropical Storm Paeng to the country's agriculture and infrastructure sectors has so far reached close to PHP9 billion, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Wednesday.

In its situation report, the NDRRMC placed agriculture damage at PHP4.27 billion in Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, Western Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) and the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).

Affected farmers and fisherfolk are placed at 109,489.

Meanwhile, infrastructure damage was estimated at PHP4.67 billion in Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, Western Visayas, Central Luzon, Northern Mindanao, BARMM and CAR.

A total of 53,229 houses were damaged by the tropical cyclone across the country, which includes 48,248 "partially damaged" houses and 4,981 "totally damaged" houses.

A total of 1,315,083 families or 5,299,716 persons living in 9,680 barangays nationwide were affected. Around 10,283 families or 46,255 persons are still being sheltered in 214 evacuation centers with the remainder having returned home or being aided by relatives and friends.

The death toll from Paeng's onslaught has climbed to 154 -- 124 of which have been validated.

Out of a total of 147 injured persons, 113 have been verified while 19 out of 30 reported missing persons have also been confirmed. (PNA)
