MANILA – Türkiye expressed willingness to help in the modernization program of the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Turkish military attachè to the Philippines Capt. Yavuz Mercan conveyed this in a courtesy visit to the PNP headquarters in Camp Crame, Quezon City last Nov. 3, the police force said in Facebook post on Thursday night.

Mercan and Turkish military administrative attachè First Sergeant Üzeyir Özbidak were received by Brig. Gen. Flynn Dongbo and Col. Roderick Minong of the PNP Directorate for Logistics at the PNP Star Officers’ Lounge.

Both sides affirmed their joint commitment to further bolster defense cooperation where Turkey has displayed a keen interest in supporting Philippine military modernization efforts.

The bill pushing for the revitalization and capability enhancement of the PNP, which has yet to be passed by Congress, seeks to attain 100 percent basic “move-shoot-communicate-investigate” equipage fill-up.

Recently, the PNP Bids and Awards Committee successfully procured over 8,000 units of 9mm Striker Fired Pistol “GIRSAN” from Turkey which is part of capability enhancement programs for the years 2021 and 2022.

The pistols were supplied to the PNP by the Joint Venture of Nashe Enterprise and Girsan Makina Vei Hafif Silah San Tic As.

“Our country is facing an increasingly complex array of challenges to internal security, the Turkish Military Attachè visit is a significant step for the PNP in its bid to continuously boost its operational capability in addressing emerging forms of criminality, terrorism, and other threats to national security," PNP chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin added. (PNA)
