UST spikers advance to V-League quarterfinal round

MANILA - University of Santo Tomas rallied past Adamson University, 25-13, 27-25, 22-25, 25-19, to notch its third win in Pool A of the 2022 V-League Men's Collegiate Challenge at the Paco Arena Sports and Events Center here on Friday.

Outside hitter Josh Ybañez had 14 attacks and two aces as the Tigers moved to the quarterfinal round, while sending the Soaring Falcons to their third loss in four outings.

"There's an improvement, but sometimes they're regressing, stepping back to their own habits because of the new system. But since there's improvement, it's okay, (it’s) still manageable," said UST head coach Odjie Mamon after the match.

JM Tropia had nine attacks, one block and a service ace while Joshua Magalaman scored eight points, including six blocks for Adamson.

Meanwhile, Axel Van Book scored 16 points as San Beda University stunned unbeaten University of Perpetual Help, 25-18, 25-22, 20-25, 25-18, to improve its win-loss record in Pool B with a 3-2 card.

Louie Ramirez scored 17 attacks and two aces, while Klint Michael Mateo made 10 attacks for the Altas, who shared the top spot with the Ateneo Eagles at 3-1.

In the other game, Arellano University registered its first win in Pool A after conquering College of St. Benilde, 25-20, 25-22, 26-24.

Carl Justin Berdal had 16 attacks and one block, while Arman Clarence Guinto finished with 12 attacks, one block and a service ace for Arellano, which is now tied with St. Benilde and Adamson.

Georgie Guani is the top scorer for the Blazers with 13 points, with team captain Roniey Adviento adding nine points. (PNA)
