CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) in Mindanao has underscored the importance of engaging communities to increase public awareness and understanding of "climate information.”

In a media forum here Wednesday, PAGASA-Mindanao weather services chief Anthony Joseph Lucero said most communities are still unaware of understanding climate information in preventing large-scale effects of natural disasters including those caused by typhoons.

"When you know climate information, you can demand for better (climate resilient) projects," he said.

Lucero said PAGASA has been conducting an information drive to farmers and fisherfolk because they are the most vulnerable sector to climate-induced disasters.

Climate information not only includes understanding weather forecasts but also planning and evaluation measures based on seasonal climate patterns, he explained.

Last week, PAGASA-Mindanao conducted a Provincial Climate Forum on La Niña for Soccsksargen and Bangsamoro regions.

Lucero said the forum aims to make participants primarily understand weather, flood, and climate.

PAGASA Administrator Vicente Malano said they are also making use of the forum to know the information needed by the people on the ground.

"On our part, we can also see what we should do to be united in understanding," he said. (PNA)
