DUMAGUETE CITY – Dengue cases in Negros Oriental have risen to 2,008 with nine deaths from January 1 to November 12, marking a 196 percent increase than the 679 cases and zero death logged in the same period last year.

In a report released Thursday, the Provincial Health Office said the number this year is also getting closer to the 2,483 total number of cases reported in 2020.

The cities and municipalities with the highest number of dengue cases are Canlaon with 287; Dumaguete City, 227; Guihulngan City, 196; La Libertad, 191; Bayawan City, 175; Sibulan, 98; Bais City, 91; Siaton, 73; Sta. Catalina, 70; and Valencia, 68.

The deaths were reported in Guihulngan City and Bayawan City with two each; Dumaguete City, Siaton, Sta. Catalina, Tanjay City, and Basay with one each.

Meanwhile, Assistant Provincial Health Officer Dr. Liland Estacion, in an interview, warned the public that cases could further rise, 2022 being an “epidemic year”.

“In fact, my office received information just today that more cases are being reported in Bais City,” she said in mixed English and Cebuano.

Estacion also said she is verifying a report that a new death was recorded in Bais City.

She reminded the public to take the necessary precautionary measures to protect themselves from mosquito bites and to continuously clean their surroundings to eradicate mosquito breeding places.

The Provincial Health Office continues to undertake misting in areas where mosquito breeding sites are prevalent, she added. (PNA)
