BACOLOD CITY – The city government has allocated a total of PHP3.44 million in financial assistance to 287 locally-funded scholars enrolled in various colleges and universities here.

Implemented through the Public Employment Service Office (PESO), the scholarship program assists beneficiaries currently studying in 13 schools, data on Thursday showed.

PESO manager Jovelyn Canoy Dato-on said each scholar will receive PHP12,000, covering the first semester of the school year 2022-2023.

“We are releasing PHP3.4 million worth of financial assistance. We will deliver the checks to each school to ensure that every beneficiary will receive the assistance,” she added.

Dato-on said the PESO made sure the recipients have fully complied with the requirements and are deserving to be city scholars, considering that the city government is spending the taxpayers’ money for the scholarship program.

City Ordinance 102 or the "Bacolod Educational Scholarship Program” grants financial assistance to poor and deserving students to help them finish a college degree and become a contributor to the city’s labor force and economy.

The scholars, on the other hand, are obliged to maintain a grade point average not lower than 85 percent for a degree course and 80 percent for a technical course. (PNA)
