4 young Zambo City chess players’ medal haul cited

ZAMBOANGA CITY – The city government recognized Monday four young Zamboanga chess players who bagged medals during the Nov. 3 to15 6th Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championship in Thailand.

John Cyrus Borce, 14; Angela Joelle San Luis, 17; Robick Vohn Villa, 17; and Cyreine Jean Borce, 10, were presented with certificates of recognition for their performance that contributed seven gold, three silver, and two bronze medals to the Philippine medal tally.

Cyrus competed in the 14-year-old and under-boys category, San Luis in the 18 and under-girls category, and Cyreine Jean in the 10-year-old and under-girls category.

Dr. Cecil Atilano, city sports director, presented the young chess masters to Mayor John Dalipe Monday morning at the city hall grounds.

Also recognized was chess coach Joey Florendo for "exerting his best efforts that resulted in the victorious participation of the four young Zamboanga chess wizards during the international competition."

Atilano said the chess players as well as their coach are set to receive cash incentives from the local government. (PNA)
