26 Siargao surfers join nat’l tourney in Samar

BUTUAN CITY – Around 26 professional surfers from Siargao Island will be joining the third leg of the Pilipinas Surfing National Tour.

The sporting event, dubbed “The Surf in the City Festival 2022”, will be held in Baybay, Borongan City, Eastern Samar from Nov. 26 to Dec. 3.

It will be sanctioned by the United Philippine Surfing Association and presented by Borongan City, the Eastern Samar provincial government, and also the province’s lone legislative district.

Twenty of the participating surfers from Siargao Island are men while six are women.

Of the male participants, 11 will be competing in the Junior Boys Short Board Division and nine in Men’s Open Short Board Division.

Four of the six female athletes will also compete in the Women’s Open Short Board Division and two in the Junior Girls Short Board Division.

The surfers from Siargao Island, who received full support from the Office of Surigao del Norte 1st District Rep. Francisco Jose Matugas II and the Gen. Luna municipality, were formally sent to the venue of the upcoming event on Thursday.

In a statement, Matugas wished the surfers the best of luck to bring home the major prizes of the event.

“We ask the people of Siargao Island to pray for the safety and success of our players. The future is bright for our very own surfers in Siargao,” he said.

Among the Siargao surfers who will see action in the sporting event is Noah Arkfeld.

Arkfeld emerged as champion in the 1st Mayor Sol’s National Surfing Competition held last Sept. 28 to Oct. 2 at Cloud 9 Surfing Site in Gen. Luna. (PNA)
