MANILA – The Department of Agriculture (DA) disclosed Thursday it has seized over PHP200,000 worth of smuggled yellow onions in some markets in Metro Manila.

In a statement, the DA vowed to intensify coordination with other concerned government agencies to prevent the proliferation of smuggled agricultural commodities in the market.

“We will continue to work with other agencies of the government to protect the livelihood of our farmers and fishers,” Assistant Secretary and DA-Wide Field Inspectorate James Layug said.

Layug issued the statement as they seized hundreds of kilos of smuggled onions in an operation last week at Divisoria, Mutya ng Pasig, and Balintawak markets.

The DA said authorities seized a total of 105 sacks of smuggled yellow onions from Divisoria, Mutya ng Pasig, and Balintawak markets with a total weight of 744 kilos, valued at PHP225,000.

The smuggled items were immediately disposed of. (PNA)
