MANILA – Authorities intercepted several bales of used clothing, commonly known as "ukay-ukay," and used shoes worth around PHP410,000 that were recently turned over to the Bureau of Customs (BOC)-Port of Legazpi.

In a statement Tuesday, Port of Legazpi Acting District Collector Arthur Sevilla Jr. said the 31 bales of used clothing, and 10 bales of used shoes were onboard a private van when it was intercepted by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG)-Sorsogon in Matnog town on Dec. 6.

The vehicle was in transit from Manila to Catarman, Northern Samar.

The team recommended the issuance of a Warrant of Seizure and Detention (WSD) against the goods and their conveyance for violation of Sections 118, 1113, and 1401 of Republic Act (RA) 10863 or the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act.

It also violated RA 4653 which prohibits the importation of used clothes and rags.

The operation was part of the Bureau’s continuing efforts to secure the country's borders against the entry of prohibited goods.

Sevilla, meanwhile, lauded the PCG-Sorsogon for their contribution to the joint operation.

He added that the Port is committed to fulfilling its mandate to strengthen border protection in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s order to stop all forms of smuggling in the country. (PNA)
