CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga – Governor Dennis Pineda on Thursday urged Bantay Bayan members in the province to help in the campaign against online "sabong" or cockfighting and illegal drugs.

Pineda made the call amid verified reports of unauthorized online sabong operations in the city and other towns despite the cease order of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation to authorized permit holders in April 2022 upon the directive of former President Rodrigo Duterte.

Pineda cited the vital role of the Bantay Bayan members who served as force multipliers of the local government units, the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police in curbing all forms of criminality.

He told some 2,493 Bantay Bayan members from the towns of Candaba, Macabebe and Masantol who attended the two-day briefing on the “Roles of Bantay Bayan in the Implementation of Protocols for Safe Communities and in the Campaign Against Illegal Drugs” at the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center here that they have the authority to arrest those who are operating e-sabong in their respective villages.

"Do not let your names be used for suspicious parcel coming from abroad, it might be drugs. Also, I am repeating that online betting in the barangay is prohibited. You, the Bantay Bayan, have an authority to arrest those who are violating. Call the police. If the police did not do anything, tell me and I will be the one to remove them,” the governor said in Filipino during the event.

In the event on Wednesday attended by some 6,468 Bantay Bayan members, Pineda said he and Vice Governor Lilia Pineda have not authorized any company to operate e-sabong in the province.

He also warned Bantay Bayan members against protecting e-sabong operators, adding that protectors would be dealt with by the strong force of the law.

“No barangay official can protect them. No one can use my name and Vice Governor Nanay because we do not authorize anyone,” he said.

The governor also sought the help of the Bantay Bayan in curbing illegal drugs.

“I am asking their support to totally eliminate illegal drugs. The police cannot do it alone. We need information on the ground,” he added. (PNA)
