MANILA – A magnitude 5.3 earthquake jolted Abra on Monday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The tectonic quake struck 5 km. northeast of the municipality of Boliney.

It was 45 km. deep.

Intensity IV was felt in Banayoyo, Ilocos Sur; Intensity II in Baguio City, Benguet; and Intensity I in Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte.

Phivolcs also logged the following instrumental intensities:

Intensity IV - Vigan City, Ilocos Sur
Intensity III - Bangued, Abra
Intensity II - Baguio City, Benguet; Sinait, Ilocos Sur; Santiago City, Isabela
Intensity I - Penablanca, Gonzaga, Cagayan; Laoag City, Nueva Era, Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte; Tagudin, Ilocos Sur

Reported intensity is the traditional way of knowing the intensity based on reports of people who felt the earthquake. Instrumental intensity is measured using an intensity meter that measures ground acceleration.

Phivolcs said both aftershocks and damage are expected from the magnitude 5.3 quake. (PNA)
