ILOILO CITY – Ilonggos were urged to become modern heroes by getting inspiration from Dr. Jose Rizal whose love for the country and his determination to promote social justice made significant contributions.

This was the message of Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas as Ilonggos joined the entire nation on Friday in commemorating Rizal’s 126th death anniversary.

“We can all become modern heroes of the country by helping our fellowmen, by doing your own little share in bettering our communities, by doing the best in your work, by supporting government in projects and programs that promote sustainability. We can all be heroes,” he said in a ceremony held at the historic Plaza Libertad here.

The mayor said that if anyone can have the same love for the Philippines, then it can create a huge impact on society in general and Iloilo City in particular.

Meanwhile, University of the Philippines Visayas Chancellor Dr. Clement Camposano cited the need to share Rizal’s “intellectual audacity”.

“We should dare to mobilize our knowledge of the past for present purposes. Only this way can our memory of the past serve, not as a guide, but as a foundation upon which the edifice of the future will be built!” he said in his message.

The commemoration was highlighted by the wreath–laying ceremony at the statue of Rizal at the Plaza Libertad, the site where the last remnants of colonizers surrendered to Filipino guerrillas on Dec. 25, 1898.

This year’s commemoration was anchored on the theme Rizal: Alaalang Iningatan, Yaman Ngayon ng Bayan (Rizal: Preserved Memories, Country’s Treasure to this Day). (PNA)
