BUTUAN CITY – Agusan del Norte 2nd District Representative Dale Corvera, who serves as the national president of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP), said the organization’s membership has reached over 1.2 million last year.
Corvera said the organization grew despite the pandemic that hit the country in the past two years, limiting face-to-face classes and other community activities.
“Amid the pandemic, we conducted virtual scouting activities with the support of the local government units, especially in the payment of membership fees,” Corvera said in an interview Thursday.
The organization also provided incentives to local councils by allowing them to utilize the membership fees for their operations in the localities, he added.
Of the total BSP members, 1,147,347 are scouts; 75,197 are unit leaders; 1,798 are local council board members; and 21,846 are lay leaders.
The highest number of members is recorded in Eastern Visayas at 15.10 percent; Southern Tagalog (14.82 percent), Central Luzon (14.00 percent); Eastern Mindanao (13.15 percent); and National Capital Region (9.63 percent).
The rest of the regions in the country account for single-digit percentages in terms of membership in the organization.
Corvera said the 1,246,188 membership achievement of BSP was also recognized by the World Scout Committee (WSC) and the World Organization of the Scout Movement. (PNA)
