DUMAGUETE CITY – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) here is calling on the public to avail of the satellite registration of voters for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections in October.

Lawyer Ian Macaraya, election officer of this capital city, on Thursday noted a low turnout in voters’ registration in December last year and even after the holidays.

He told the Philippine News Agency that they had scheduled satellite registration to make it easier for the public to register in their barangays or at the nearest venue.

“Apart from our regular registration at our office, the satellite registration schedule targets to reach as many people as possible so they can sign up for the barangay and SK elections but the people were apparently busy during the holidays,” he said in mixed English and Cebuano.

Macaraya hopes that registrants would not wait until the last minute, citing the deadline on Jan. 31, with no extension.

Records at the Comelec office here showed that as of Jan. 11, the number of newly registered voters was at 1,112.

On Wednesday, a special registration was set at the gymnasium in Poblacion 1 here for persons with disability and senior citizens but not one from these sectors showed up, Macaraya lamented.

Only 14 young people registered that day, the Comelec records showed.

On Thursday, the poll body held a special registration for persons deprived of liberty at the City Detention and Rehabilitation Center, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology in Barangay Bajumpandan here. (PNA)
