DepEd-NCR saddened by stabbing incident, vows intervention

MANILA – The Department of Education-National Capital Region (DepEd-NCR) vowed Friday prompt assistance and intervention to the individuals affected by the stabbing incident that led to the death of a 13-year-old learner at the Culiat High School in Quezon City.

In a statement, the DepEd-NCR said it is disturbed by the incident that happened inside the school premises.

“We are deeply saddened and disturbed that (a) violent incident such as this happened among our students inside the school which is supposed to be a safe place,” the DepEd-NCR said.

With this, the DepEd-NCR said that aid will be provided for the family of the victim as well as proper intervention for the affected individuals.

“DepEd-NCR through the Schools Division Office of Quezon City and Culiat High School shall provide assistance to the family of the victim,” it said.

The office also assured proper intervention to the involved child in conflict with the law (CICL).

“The Regional Interim Learners Rights and Protection Section in coordination with the Division Child Protection Unit and the School Child Protection Committee shall come up with appropriate intervention mechanisms for the CICL student and shall facilitate for his continuous education through alternative modes,” it said.

The initial report indicated that the incident happened inside the campus while the victim was waiting for their class to start.

“The Department of Education- National Capital Region condoles with the family of the minor student who was fatally stabbed this morning, January 20, 2023, at around 5:45 AM inside Culiat High School in Quezon City by a fellow minor student,” the DepEd-NCR said.

The Quezon City Police District report indicated that the 15-year-old CICL, also in Grade 7, "stabbed the unsuspecting victim in his chest who fell on the ground and lost consciousness.”

“The victim was rushed to New Era General Hospital for emergency medical attention. However, the victim was pronounced dead at about 6:20 AM, on the same date by Dr. Lovenia Manzo, the attending physician,” it added.

The report noted that the CICL is now under the custody of police authorities.

The DepEd, meanwhile, said psychological first aid has been provided for the learners who witnessed the incident. Follow-up stress debriefing sessions shall also be given to them.

It also urged all stakeholders in the education sector to intensify efforts to ensure that learners will be “peace-loving and responsible members of the community.” (PNA)
