Death toll from non-stop rains, floods climbs to 38: OCD

MANILA – The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said the reported death toll from heavy rains and floods caused by a low pressure area, shear line and northeast monsoon in the country since early January has climbed to 38.

In its latest bulletin, the OCD said 19 of these deaths have been validated -- nine from Zamboanga Peninsula; seven from Eastern Visayas; two from Northern Mindanao and one from Davao Region.

The remaining 19 are still undergoing validation -- eight from Bicol; six from Northern Mindanao; three from Zamboanga Peninsula and one each from Mimaropa and Soccsksargen.

The number of injured and missing persons stands at 12 and seven, respectively.

The affected population is placed at 475,981 or 1,941,146 individuals.

The OCD said the displaced population is estimated at 30,046 families or 116,636 persons.

As of this posting, some PHP101.1 million worth of assistance was provided to the affected families.

The amount of damage to agriculture and infrastructure is pegged at PHP751.9 million and PHP280.2 million, respectively.

Some 1,780 houses were reported damaged due to the effects of the three weather systems. (PNA)
