ILOILO CITY –  The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) in Western Visayas will roll out in the town of Carles in Iloilo province its facilitated subscriber identity module (SIM) card registration to reach out to users in remote areas.

Leah Dela Cruz -Doromal, officer-in-charge-regional director of the NTC Western Visayas, on Thursday said telecommunication providers will install the necessary facilities during the registration.

"We are inviting everyone, especially the nearby municipalities and barangays of Carles to join us at the gymnasium starting 9 o'clock," she said in a media interview.

NTC Legal Officer Deo Virgil Tan said they have identified municipalities in the region considered remote and so far their central office has approved the facilitated registration in the towns of Carles and Lemery in Iloilo and Madalag in Aklan.

Remote areas are those with poor signal coverage or no signal at all, Tan said.

The registrations in Lemery and Madalag are scheduled next week.

Those who will avail of the facilitated registration are advised to bring valid ID cards with a photo and the SIM they use on cellular phones.

SIM cards being used by minors will be registered in the name of their parents.

As of Jan. 24, 2023, NTC has registered 24.922 million SIM cards nationwide.

"This is expected to increase as we rollout our facilitated registration. This is simultaneous along with other regional offices starting jan.25," Tan said.

The facilitated SIM registration is joined by the three telecommunication firms Globe, Smart and Dito; the Department of Information and Communications Technology and the Philippine National Police in coordination with the local government unit. (PNA)
