CITY OF MALOLOS, Bulacan – The provincial government here has provided fishing gear to marginal fishers here as part of its continuing efforts to help improve their living condition.

Gov. Daniel R. Fernando led on Wednesday the distribution of 233 gill nets and 65 marine engines to 300 fishers from this city and from the municipalities of Hagonoy, Calumpit, Paombong, San Rafael and Obando.

Fernando said the move is aimed at providing sustainable livelihood support to small-scale fisherfolk in the province.

“It is part of our continuing efforts to help improve the lives of our marginal fishers,” he said in an interview on Thursday.

The governor cited the vital role of agriculture in the growth and development of the province.

“Mahalaga ang agrikultura. Mahalaga ang seguridad sa pagkain. Sa kabila ng pag-unlad, kailangan na ipagpatuloy natin ang pangangalaga at pagsusulong ng ating agrikultura (Agriculture is important. The food security is important. In spite of the development, we need to continuously protect and promote our agriculture),” he said.

Fernando also asked the fisherfolk to always be prepared and alert for natural disasters as these will affect their livelihood.

Aside from the fishing gear, the governor also distributed PHP1,000 cash for each fisherman as additional assistance to their families. (PNA)
