BUTUAN CITY – The Philippine Coast Guard in Surigao del Norte (PCG-SDN) has aided a ship captain who suffered a mild stroke off the coast of Surigao City on Sunday.

“Through our station commander, Romeo Dax Calamaya, the PCG-SDN immediately dispatched a Deployable Response Group, particularly at the northeast of Surigao City where the ship was temporarily anchored,” the PCG-SDN said in a statement Monday.

The PCG office said it immediately responded to the distress call dispatched by the Harbor Master of the Philippine Ports Authority in Surigao on the condition of the ship captain while underway from Davao City bound for Batangas City.

The ship captain was identified as Virgelio M. Palado, 59, of Bulacan City and skipper of MV Pearl Orient.

“He was immediately given initial medical assistance and administered with oxygen for his respiratory situation recovery,” the PCG-SDN said.

The patient was successfully transported to the nearest hospital in Surigao City for medical attention. (PNA)
