CEBU CITY – After being awarded by the local police, the two nursing students here who rushed to the aid of a wounded woman will receive the “Mayor’s Awards” during the Cebu City Charter celebration on Feb. 24, Mayor Michael Rama said on Tuesday.

Rama said Angyl Faith Ababat and Kristianne Joice Noelle Ona, sophomores in the College of Nursing at the University of Cebu, will be recognized for their “courage” shown despite the danger of also getting injured.

Netizens hailed Ababat and Ona’s act of applying first aid to 54-year-old fruit vendor, Bernadita Zamora, whose neck was slashed by her live-in partner Edwin Lumad, 58, in the presence of many people who were waiting for a ride along Plaridel St. on Jan. 30.

“Most would cower and fear for safety. But we have two students who went out of their way to provide first aid to the vendor. Their act of humanity has saved a life,” Rama said.

Zamora is now recuperating in a hospital while Lumacad is detained, facing criminal charges for injuring his common-law wife.

The city government will give the special recognitions to both students to inspire other youth to help people who are in dire situations.

Meanwhile, Rama said the city government will welcome Ababat and Ona should the duo decide to join the corps of nurses at the Cebu City Medical Center, once they graduate and get their licenses.

On Monday, Cebu City police chief, Col. Ireneo Dalogdog bestowed on the two students an award for their heroism during the flag-raising ceremony at the Camp Sotero Cabahug here. (PNA)
