MANILA – No Filipino was reported among the dozens killed in the fatal head-on collision between two trains in Greece this week, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Thursday.
“(The Philippine Embassy in) Athens is continuing to verify if there are any Philippine nationals among the fatalities or injured when two trains collided head-on in Greece late February 28. To date, there is no Filipino casualty reported,” said DFA spokesperson Ma. Teresita Daza in a statement.
Local reports said at least 38 were killed in the crash, with authorities expecting the number to rise.
The passenger train was carrying more than 350 when it collided with a freight train near the city of Larissa and many of the victims are believed to be students returning from a long holiday weekend.
In an address following his return from the crash site, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the crash was due to a “tragic human error.” (PNA)
