MANILA – A magnitude 5.3 earthquake jolted Davao de Oro early Monday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The tectonic quake struck 22 km. southeast of the municipality of New Bataan at 4:43 a.m. It was 2 km. deep.

Intensity IV was felt in New Bataan, Maco, and Mawab, Davao De Oro; while intensity III was reported in Nabunturan, Davao De Oro.

Intensity II was felt in Laak, Davao De Oro; and intensity I in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur.

Phivolcs also logged the following instrumental intensities:

Intensity IV -- Nabunturan, Davao De Oro
Intensity II -- Davao City, Davao Del Sur

Intensity is based on reports of people who felt the earthquake, while instrumental intensity is measured using an intensity meter that measures ground acceleration.

Phivolcs, meanwhile, said both aftershocks and damage are possible from the magnitude 5.3 quake. (PNA)
