MANILA – National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) chief Maj. Gen. Edgar Alan Okubo on Tuesday reported that the first day of the weeklong transport strike being held nationwide was peaceful in Metro Manila.

And to prevent the expected ill effects upon the commuting public, Okubo ordered the utilization of all available mobility and logistical assets along with the local government units (LGUs) and other government agencies in launching "Libreng Sakay" (free ride) to affected commuters.

In the last count, a total of 4,374 police officers from the five police districts of NCRPO and 200 personnel from the regional mobile field battalions, together with a total of 548 vehicles were deployed for security and safety operations in the metropolis.

"Generally, the first day of this nationwide transport strike turned out to be generally peaceful and we owe this to the collaborative effort of all government units concerned, the LGUs, and our non-government organizations and our counterparts from various sectors of society," Okubo said.

He added that the NCRPO acknowledged their effort "and we look forward to further strengthening our commitment to ensure a peaceful and safe conduct of this week-long transport strike." (PNA)
