LEGAZPI CITY – Almost 12,000 barangay workers have received a sack of rice from the provincial government of Sorsogon under its assistance program for village workers.

In an interview on Tuesday, Salvador Mendoza, Sorsogon provincial information officer, said almost all 11,917 barangay workers were able to receive the sack of rice this month.

"Of the 14 towns and one city in the province, only the town of Juban and Sorsogon City barangay workers were yet to receive. We are just waiting for the supply of rice since we are getting commercial rice from the local traders here in the province," he said.

Mendoza said the allocated fund for the rice distribution assistance to 507 barangays was from the provincial government.

"As promised by our Governor Jose Edwin B. Hamor, he continues what former governor, now Senator Francis Escudero started, the yearly sack of rice distribution to all barangay workers. Before, only barangay health workers, nutrition scholars and daycare workers were included but now even the barangay police are recipients," he noted.

Mendoza said the yearly assistance provided by the provincial government is one way of showing appreciation to the hardworking and efficient barangay workers who provide security and health services to the villagers.

Those who received one sack of rice each were barangay tanod, barangay nutrition scholars, barangay health workers and child development workers. (PNA)
