SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique – The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in Antique’s capital town has opened its Dalipe Fire Substation to school kids for three days starting on Tuesday for them to learn how to help prevent fire incidents in their homes.
“Every year we have the open house or station tour as part of the Fire Prevention Month. For San Jose de Buenavista Fire Station we called it Piyesta sa Istasyon because we wanted the kids to learn and at the same time to have fun,” Inspector Vic Matta, chief of the BFP San Jose de Buenavista Station, said in an interview Wednesday.
Through the three-day activity to run until March 16, kids from the various schools in Antique’s capital town can experience holding the hose and nozzle to suppress a fire, go on board the firetruck and ambulance, and get the feel of being a fireman.
“There had been incidents in other places that children had been trapped and burned to death inside the restrooms because they thought it’s the safest place for them whenever there is a fire,” he said.
Matta said the restroom is not the safest place so children should know where to exit in case of a fire incident.
During the station tour, parents who join their children attend the Exit in the Home (EDITH) symposium so they could also orient their children.
“School kids are also instructed that once they are already out of their homes, they should remain outside for their own safety,”Matta said.
He added that right now the BFP San Jose de Buenavista has one main station and three substations located in various strategic locations of the municipality for fast response in case of fire incident.
“There will be an additional sub-station at the Robinsons Place Antique within the next two to three months when it will be finished,” Matta said. (PNA)
