LEGAZPI CITY – The Department of Education in Bicol (DepEd-5) on Wednesday said it will set up Child Protection Corners during the Palarong Bicol to ensure the safety of the student-athletes.

In an interview, Mayflor Marie Jumamil, DepEd-5 information division chief, said the Child Protection Corners to be established in the four cluster areas are an adoption of the DepEd Child Protection Policy under the DepEd Order 40 s. 2012, that will be implemented before, during and after sporting events.

"The Child Protection Corners is in accordance with the safeguarding guidelines that will be implemented to minimize risk, guarantee safe space, and ensure a positive experience for all delegates, organizers, and others involved in the event," Jumamil said.

She said DepEd-Bicol reiterates a zero-tolerance policy for any act of child abuse, exploitation, violence, discrimination, bullying and other forms of abuse.

"If the student-athlete wishes to report a child protection concern while the Palarong Bicol is ongoing, he or she may approach any child protection help desk personnel assigned in different cluster areas," she said.

Jumamil added that all officials and entire delegations shall strictly adhere to the safe and unsafe touches in sports, to ensure safe, confident, and dignified practice when using appropriate and necessary touches.

"Safe touches are only done in the non-private parts of the body such as handshaking, high five or bump fists from coach, teammate, pat on the back, supervised public massage for injured athletes. Safe touches must be done for affirmation, reassurance, cohesion instruction, and sports-specific rituals," she said.

Jumamil encouraged student-athletes to talk, call, text, or approach the Child Protection Corner team for any concerns of bullying or any form of abuse.

Bicol schools are preparing their athletes for the regional selection meet that will be conducted from April 24-28. (PNA)
