MANILA – Local carriers AirAsia Philippines and Philippine Airlines (PAL) on Thursday expressed support to the government's plan to make the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 2 exclusive for domestic operations.

PAL has been using the Terminal 2 for both its local and international flights, The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) announced last Tuesday that Terminal 2 will be an all-domestic facility starting July 1, catering to domestic flights of both PAL and AirAsia.

In a radio interview on Thursday, AirAsia Philippines spokesperson Steve Dailisan said the airline supports the management's initiative to optimize the use of all the NAIA terminals.

He said they already received a notice regarding the transfer of their domestic flights from Terminal 4 to Terminal 2, so they still have some months to prepare.

"That is okay with us. But we will request that our international flights will be moved from Terminal 3 to Terminal 1," said Dailisan, adding that this is because some international passengers may have a connecting flight to domestic destinations. "The distance between Terminals 3 and 2 is quite far," he said.

Dailisan said the MIAA have informed them that Terminal 1 still has space to accommodate more passengers.

Since December 2022, PAL's flights to and from the United States, Canada and Middle East have been transferred to Terminal 1.

Earlier this week, MIAA senior assistant general manager Bryan Co announced that PAL's remaining international flights will be transferred to Terminal 1 by June 16.

According to MIAA, NAIA Terminal 1 could cater to 6.5 million passengers annually. The daily average passenger volume for the first two months of 2023 is 18,000, it said.

PAL spokesperson Cielo Villaluna said the MIAA is currently consulting with stakeholders regarding the terminal changes.

"We support initiatives that aim to enhance total passenger experience," she said in a statement, adding that PAL is working with authorities as it gears up for the use of Terminal 2 as an all-domestic terminal.

Terminal 2 was originally designed as a domestic airport, and hence, was not designed to have a section for the Bureau of Immigration, as well as a Duty-Free store.

Co said Immigration officers assigned at Terminal 2 could then augment the manpower at Terminals 1 and 3. (PNA)
