BUTUAN CITY – Residents in the Caraga Region are advised to be watchful of the increasing heat index in the region in the next five days.

In an advisory Monday, the Department of Science and Technology’s Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) office here said the increasing heat index in the region in the coming days is caused by the easterlies.

“The high temperature, caused by the easterlies, will last until May this year,” it said.

Maximum heat index forecast for the region from March 27 to 31 will be from 33 to 41 degrees Celsius, it added.

Such levels of heat index signify extreme caution as this can cause heat cramps and exhaustion, and the continuing activities of individuals under such conditions could result in heat stroke.

Residents are advised to drink sufficient water and to bring along their umbrellas and hats for protection against high temperatures and humidity when outside their homes.

The five-day forecast also indicated a very high heat index to hit the region on Tuesday at 35 to 42 degrees Celsius.

In this city, the temperature on Tuesday may reach a maximum of 42 degrees Celsius, the advisory said.

It also advised the middle-aged and seniors, especially those with comorbidities, to be watchful of the increasing heat index in the region. (PNA)
