TACLOBAN CITY – The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) recorded 20 fire incidents in Eastern Visayas in March 2023, which left PHP4.36 million worth of losses.

The number is higher than the 18 fire incidents recorded in the same month last year, with PHP3.6 million worth of properties destroyed, said Chief Supt. Adel Bautista, BFP 8 (Eastern Visayas) director, during a press briefing Thursday, the day before the end of Fire Prevention Month.

From March 1 to March 29, fire incidents were reported in Tacloban City and San Isidro in Leyte province, Marabut, Tagapul-an, and Paranas in Samar, and Pintuyan and Libagon in Southern Leyte.

“One of the most leading causes of fires is faulty electrical wiring. Sometimes an extension wire becomes a permanent wire. Exposed wirings can release heat on combustible surfaces and old wirings are more likely to overload due to the number of appliances being used in a house,” Bautista told reporters. (PNA)
