MANILA – The Social Security System (SSS) has given the mother of slain overseas Filipino worker (OFW), Jullebee Ranara, proceeds of benefit claims.
In a statement Friday, the SSS reported that Norlynda Cabiles, mother and SSS beneficiary of Ranara, received more than PHP100,000 comprising of death and funeral benefits, and financial assistance from officials and employees.
Ranara, 35, a Filipina migrant worker based in Kuwait, was killed last January. Based on reports, her burnt body was found in the desert of Kuwait on Jan. 22.
The primary suspect, the 17-year-old son of her employers, has been arrested by Kuwait authorities.
“Considering the sacrifices being made by our OFWs by working in a foreign country and being away from their families for a long period of time, it is very important that they have an active SSS membership which will help them and their families in times of contingencies,” SSS president and chief executive officer Rolando Macasaet said.
He emphasized continuous support and efforts towards the social security protection of OFWs.
He also offered Ranara’s sibling a job opportunity within the SSS.
Under the Social Security law, the agency provides seven benefit programs -- sickness, maternity, unemployment, retirement, disability, death, funeral, and other loan privileges. (PNA)
