TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Tourism (DOT) 8 (Eastern Visayas) here on Tuesday asked tourists coming to the region to transact with accredited tourism service providers for their summer vacation.

The DOT-8 developed a QR code to direct visitors to the list of accredited tourism-related establishments and connect with service providers easily, according to its director, Karina Rosa Tiopes, in an interview.

The site provides visitors with relevant travel information after scanning the QR code using their smartphones.

The data include the regional list of DOT-accredited travel and tour agencies, land tourist transport, accommodation establishments, agri-tourism farm sites, restaurants, boat trip schedules, destinations brochures, flight schedules, map of Eastern Visayas, tour packages, contact details, and tourism product updates.

The QR code also includes information for "Explore the Infinite Escapes of Eastern Visayas," "Fun things to do in Eastern Visayas," "Sail Eastern Visayas," and "Why is it more fun in Leyte and Samar Islands."

"We strongly advise our tourists to patronize and avail of the services of DOT-accredited tourism enterprises. This will assure you that you are dealing with legitimate tourism businesses who follow ethical business practices and provide good customer service,” Tiopes said in a phone interview.

To ensure that tourists enjoy their visit to the region, they are also advised to constantly check travel advisories, weather forecasts, and emergency contact details.

Eastern Visayas consists of the provinces of Biliran, Eastern Samar, Leyte, Northern Samar, Samar and Southern Leyte, and the cities of Baybay, Borongan, Calbayog, Catbalogan, Maasin, Ormoc, and Tacloban, the Eastern Visayas’ regional center.

Among its popular destinations are the Kalanggaman Island, San Juanico Bridge, Leyte Landing Memorial in Leyte; Sambawan Island in Biliran; dive sites in Southern Leyte; Calicoan Island in Eastern Samar; Sohoton Cave and Natural Park in Samar and the Biri Rock Formations in Northern Samar.
