Building collapses in Manhattan, New York

NEW YORK – At least one person was killed in the collapse of a parking garage in the New York district of Manhattan, Mayor Eric Adams said at a news conference, aired by local television.

He said the building’s supporting structures were extremely unstable, so rescuers were using special equipment to assess the situation.

In turn, New York Fire Department Chief of Operations James Esposito said six people were wounded: one of them died, one refused medical assistance, and four were admitted to a hospital. All of them worked at the parking garage.

The New York Fire Department said earlier that it was responding to a parking garage collapse in lower Manhattan, where people were reportedly trapped.

The collapsed building is about 200 meters away from the World Trade Center. (TASS)
