ZAMBOANGA CITY – A Dawlah Islamiya (DI) terror group member was killed in a clash with government troops in the hinterlands of Lanao del Sur, the military said Wednesday.

Lt. Col. Angestal Angeles II, the Army’s 51st Infantry Battalion commander, said the troops were conducting an operation in Barangay Kalaludan, Pagayawan, Lanao del Sur, when they clashed with at least 10 extremists on Tuesday.

He said the 15-minute firefight resulted in the death of the DI fighter while his companions scampered in different directions.

Government troops also recovered an M653 rifle with ammunition from the clash site.

Maj. Gen. Antonio Nafarrete, the Army’s 1st Infantry Division commander, commended the troops for their dedication and efforts in keeping Lanao del Sur province peaceful.

“This encounter is yet another huge blow to the enemies, which will undoubtedly demoralize their forces, and cease their delusional and irrelevant armed conflict,” Nafarrete said in a statement. (PNA)
