MANILA – A 28-year-old South Korean woman wanted by authorities in her country for fraud was arrested by agents of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) in Pampanga province.

Commissioner Norman Tansingco said Kim Yerum is now under BI custody following her arrest by members of the bureau’s fugitive search unit (FSU) on April 25 in Angeles City.

She was arrested on the strength of a deportation warrant issued by the BI chief based on a summary deportation order which the BI Board of Commissioners issued against the Korean in October 2021.

The foreigner was ordered deported after the South Korean authorities informed the BI about her presence in the country and her record as a wanted fugitive in Korea.

According to BI-FSU acting chief Rendel Ryan Sy, the foreign national is also subject of a red notice from the Interpol in March 2020, or seven months after an arrest warrant for fraud was issued against her by the Suwon district court in Korea.

He said Kim was accused of being a member of a voice phishing syndicate called “Minjun family” that has been operating since 2017.

The syndicate allegedly preys on their compatriots in Korea who are tricked into giving their money and revealing personal information due to fraudulent phone calls made by the suspects to the victims.

The South Korean is already an undocumented alien as her passport was already revoked by the Korean government.

Kim is presently detained at the BI warden facility in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City while awaiting deportation. (PNA)
