TACLOBAN CITY – The city government of Borongan in Eastern Samar will be holding a Sports Summit in June to discuss initiatives to enhance its sports program and the capacity of all sports coaches to produce better athletes.

Borongan City information officer Rupert Ambil said on Tuesday that after landing 12th among the 13 divisions in the region during the recent Eastern Visayas Regional Athletic Association (EVRAA) Meet, the local government sees a need to create a sports program.

Borongan City athlete players just earned three gold, three silver, and 11 bronze medals.

Gold medal winners were Carissa Jean Capones, a Grade 11 student of Lalawigan National High School for billiard; Mark Nigel Opanda, a Grade 6 student of Sabang Integrated School for the 800-m dash running event, and the Eastern Samar National Comprehensive High School Futsal Team.

“Our athletes come and go, but our mentors, our coaches will remain in Borongan. We have to create an opportunity for them to mentor other mentors and enrich our capacity to produce better athletes and create a sports program that does not waiver in terms of training that trains whole year round,” Ambil said in a phone interview.

Ambil added that the city government starting this year will be focusing on the Department of Education-sponsored sports competition by giving incentives to sports organizations in Borongan that will support any sports program.

“Hopefully, one of the priorities of the city is to create enough facilities for our sports program. Among projects that is in the pipeline of the city is to create a sports coliseum, which we will be proposing in the next several years,” he added.

This year, the city government provided financial assistance of at least PHP3.6-million for the regional sporting event, and more than PHP1.5-million for the city sports competition.

Ormoc City athletes have clinched the top spot in this year’s EVRAA meet on April 24 to 27, 2023 joined by six provinces and seven cities in the region.

Trailing behind are players from Leyte province and Tacloban City. (PNA)
