KIDAPAWAN CITY – The city government distributed Monday at least PHP316,000 for local athletes who won in the recently-concluded Soccsksargen Regional Athletic Association (SRAA) Meet held here.

"This is a way of recognizing their efforts and talents in bringing the name of the city,” Mayor Jose Paolo Evangelista, who led the distribution of the cash incentives and certificates of recognition to the medalists at the city gymnasium, told reporters here in an interview.

The 41 gold medalists each received PHP5,000; 37 silver medalists, PHP3,000 each; and 108 bronze medalists, PHP1,000 each.

“All winning city athletes are from our primary and secondary schools,” Evangelista said.

Aside from the bronze medalists, he noted that they increased the incentives for the city athletes from the previous offer of PHP3,000 and PHP 2,000 for the gold and silver placers, respectively.

Dr. Natividad Ocon, the city schools division superintendent, lauded all athletes in performing their best as well as the city government for its all-out support that gauged the success of the weeklong activity.

At least 5,000 athletes and coaches from eight schools division in Soccsksargen participated in the April 24-28 regional sports meet that included those from the cities of General Santos, Koronadal, Tacurong, and Kidapawan, and the provinces of South Cotabato, Sarangani, Sultan Kudarat and North Cotabato.

The SRAA ended with General Santos City garnering the most number of gold medals with 117 in the regular sports, nine in demo sports, and 18 in the para-games. (PNA)
