MANILA – The Wesleyan University–Philippines (WUP) men's and women's chess teams have made it to the Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) National Championships following their impressive showing in the regional competition held at the Columban College's Barretto Campus in Olongapo City from May 2 to 6.

Columban College finished second while Guagua National Colleges (GNC) settled for third.

Era Bauto, King-Wilfred Silverio, Joshua Navarro, and Crisjohn Paolo Vilar (men's) and Christine Mae Gamboa, Micah Serrano, Queen Juliet Besa and Sheena Princess Bon (women's) comprised the Wesleyan Knights mentored by Dr. Gener Subia.

"We trained twice a week under coach Gener and with the help of the Cabanatuan City Chess Club players to prepare for the Regional PRISAA tournament. We also participated in tournaments every month for six months, and we are glad that our team became the overall champion,” Gamboa, the team captain, said in an interview on Monday.

Subia, meanwhile, commended his players saying, "Truly, success requires hard work, and I'm glad they have learned how to persevere and triumph in the face of adversity."

The Knights expressed their gratitude to WUP Athletic Director Dr. Henry Cocoly Nacpil and their respective deans, namely Dr. Marietta Agustin (CAS), Engr. Yolanda Claudio (CECT), Dr. Juan Jerome Malaca (CBA), Prof. Rodolfo Reyes II (COEd), Dr. Ivan Uy and Prof. Judiliza Velayo (CONAMS) for the support.

Other players who will represent Region 3 (Central Luzon) in the National PRISAA to be hosted by Zamboanga City in July are Rhen Cristobal and Arvie Aguilar (Meycauayan College), Camille Anne Pasiderio and Megan Lopez (Columban College), Franchezka Paule (Guagua National Colleges) and Frenz Jeremy Ramos (WUP High School).

The PRISAA Region 3 chess tournament was managed by Dr. Reymille Zamora with Jeral Reyes as technical official and Francisco Gabriel Prevandos as chief arbiter. (PNA)
