1 killed, 11 injured as pickup truck plows into crowd in E. Samar

TACLOBAN CITY – A student was killed and 11 of his schoolmates were injured when a wayward pickup truck hit them near the entrance of their campus in Salcedo, Eastern Samar on Wednesday noon.

The Department of Education (DepEd) regional office here confirmed Wednesday night that there were 12 victims and all are students of Salcedo Vocational High School in Naparaan village.

“The car heading to Quinapondan town occupying the right lane, travelled at high speed, while 12 students were standing at the extreme left side of the road waiting for motorcycle to take them home. The car swerved to the left lane for unknown reason, hitting all the students,” the DepEd stated.

Philippine National Police confirmed late Wednesday that Grade 12 student Aprel Macajeto, 18, died on the spot after the road accident.

Injured students were identified as Lady Ann Eder, 18; Daisyiree Labutap, 18; Micaella Raagas, 17; Mariel Cabugawan, 18; Riby Garcia, 19; Nina Mae Sevilla, 16; Bea Amor Macapanas, 17; Nor-Ain Soledad, 17; Marianita Cadisal, 17; Mary Rose Caballegan, 16; and Roxanne Fabillar, 16.

The students went out of the campus for a noon break when the accident happened.

Two of the students suffered multiple injuries and are now at intensive care unit of the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center in this city. Four other students sustained serious injuries and still under observation.

All victims were rushed to the Salcedo Doctors Hospital in Salcedo town.

The driver of an Isuzu pickup truck, Manuel Waniwan, 61, is now detained at the Salcedo municipal police station.

The education department said that there would be psychological intervention for students who witnessed the road mishap.

The police is still investigating the incident. (PNA)
