LUCENA CITY – Employees of the Gumaca municipal government are on a priority list to acquire low-cost housing units set to be built through a partnership between the local government unit (LGU) and the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD).

In an interview on Saturday afternoon, Gumaca Mayor Webster Letargo said his office will prioritize municipal employees who do not own homes yet.

"We will be constructing an initial 500 to 600 units and shall be awarding them to our own municipal employees who, up to now, are still without their own house and still renting," he said, but without details yet as to how many workers could benefit from the project.

Letargo added that a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the Gumaca LGU and the DHSUD for the implementation of the housing project is set to be signed in the coming weeks while groundbreaking will follow soon after.

"Each unit will have an area of 23 square meters in a mid-rise (4 to 5 stories) condominium-style community, with their own chapel and recreation area," he revealed.

The mayor said each beneficiary will pay through Pag-IBIG Fund a monthly amortization of PHP2,300 for each unit they acquire.

Housing units left after all interested LGU employees have availed shall be offered to other government employees, including teachers and police personnel, added Letargo.

He further stated those who will take advantage of this project stand to enjoy huge savings because the one-hectare parcel of land is owned by the local government, located in Barangay Panikihan.

The total amount of the project is still to be determined, Letargo added.

"We are now waiting for the DHSUD-assigned contractor to be endorsed at the Sangguniang Bayan (SB), as a matter of protocol. The SB members will just check the contractor's previous projects," Letargo said. (PNA)
