MANILA – The expansion of the Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) with a new berth is seen to improve the efficiency of cargo movement and translate to higher trading volumes, an official of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said Monday.

During his inspection of the MICT and the groundbreaking for Berth 8, Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista assured the International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) -- operator of the MICT -- of his support for the construction of the new cargo docking site.

To help informal settler families (ISF) that may need to be relocated for the construction of access roads to the new berth, the DOTr is coordinating with the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD).

“We had some discussions with the DHSUD in moving the [affected] ISFs because we also have projects that require the settlement of ISFs,” Bautista said.

MICT’s Berth 8 was built to help handle increasing volume demand in the cargo terminal and serve new-generation container ships that carry up to 18,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU).

It measures 400 meters in quay length and 12 hectares of yard space.

Once completed, it will boost the MICT’s annual capacity from 3 million to 3.5 million TEUs. (PNA)
