ZAMBOANGA CITY – Authorities have destroyed some PHP12.9 million worth of marijuana plants in the hinterlands of Sulu province, the police reported Wednesday.

Col. Narciso Paragas, Sulu police director, reported the marijuana plants planted in some 15,000 square meters parcel of land were destroyed Tuesday in Sitio Tubig Baba, Barangay Pitogo in Kalingalan Caluang town.

No one was arrested as the owner or cultivator was not around when the joint team of policemen, soldiers, National Intelligence Coordinating Agency and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency raided the plantation, Paragas said.

The marijuana plantation was discovered through information provided to authorities by concerned residents.

Paragas said three fully grown marijuana plants were taken as evidence while the rest were destroyed.

The Kalingalan Caluang police is conducting an in-depth investigation to identify the cultivators in order to file appropriate charges against them.

Kalingalan Caluang, which comprises nine barangays, is a 5th class municipality in Sulu, with a population of 39,549 as of the 2020 census. (PNA)
