Caritas PH ready to help Mayon Volcano evacuees

MANILA – The social and humanitarian arm of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) is readying assistance to displaced families and individuals in Albay due to the continuing restiveness of Mayon Volcano. 

Caritas Philippines said it is prepared to provide assistance to the people that will be affected by the volcano which continues to spew lava. 

"Caritas Philippines' Humanitarian Team is on standby for possible deployment to augment the needs of the local Caritas,” according to its Situation Report 1 for the Mayon Volcano eruption. 

“The Alay Kapwa Solidarity Fund is also prepared to be utilized in any eventuality the Diocesan Social Action Center (DSAC) will need help augmenting local resources,” it added. 

The social arm of the church is also communicating with various agencies and organizations for donations to the affected families who are currently in the evacuation centers. 

Among them are the Philippine Faith-Based Forum (FBO-PH), Caritas Internationalis member organizations -- Catholic Relief Services, Caritas Germany and the Embassy of Israel in the Philippines. 

Earlier, the SAC Legazpi announced that displaced families are in need of non-food items such as sleeping mats, cooking utensils, water jugs and hygiene kits. 

Also, they need additional toilet and water supply that can be used for bathing, washing and washing those in the evacuation center. 

In the last report of the Albay Public Safety and Emergency Management Office, more than 4,000 families or 15,000 individuals from 23 barangays covered by 13 parishes are currently in 24 evacuation centers. (PNA)
