Altiche pockets men's singles title in Isabela tennis tourney

MANILA – Top seed John Mari Altiche lived up to his billing, beating John Jeric Accion, 6-3, 6-3, to win the men's singles Open title in the Mayor Doc Totep Calderon National Tennis Championships at the Lado Del Rio Resort court in Roxas, Isabela last Sunday.

On his way to the final, Altiche defeated Aeyshaun Gomez (4-0, 4-1), Jairo Flores (6-0, 6-1) and Alexis Santos (6-1, 6-1).

Accion, who had no trouble winning his first two matches, struggled past second seed Alberto Villamor, 5-7(2), 7-6(5), 10-6, to advance in the championship round.

Altiche received PHP50,000 in cash while Accion settled for PHP25,000.

Altiche also got a share of the PHP30,000 top prize in the doubles where he teamed up with Villamor to conquer Ivan Manila and Bryan Oliveros, 4-6, 6-4, 10-3, in the final.

Meanwhile, Mark Anthony Chy and Erwin Cruz bagged the 30-and-above title in the Legends division of the event supported by the Palawan Pawnshop National Tennis Championships and the Cagayan Valley Tennis Federation.

Other winners were Mar Bajet and Reynante Galvante (men's 40- and 50-and-above), Rolly Guañez and Wilfredo Verzosa (men's 60-and-above), Brasilia Uy and Ysabelle Uy (women’s doubles) and Brasilia Uy and Marcvin Marquez (mixed doubles). All Legends winners got PHP10,000 each.

Meanwhile, all is set for the Mayor Eric Olivarez Open scheduled from June 6-16 at the Olivarez Sports Center in Sucat, Parañaque. Players may contact event organizer and tournament director Bobby Mangunay (0915-404-6464) for details. (PNA)
