LEGAZPI CITY – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in Albay said on Wednesday a PHP138.15-million seawall project in the province has been protecting residents from storm surges and flooding, particularly during the recent Severe Tropical Storm Enteng.
In a statement, DPWH-Albay 1st District Engineer Rainero A. Zerda said the 159.26-meter seawall in Barangay Quinale Cabasan in Tabaco City has given comfort to the residents from flooding and boosted economic and tourism development since it was turned over in April this year.
Zerda said the infrastructure project, close to the Tabaco International Port, contributes to the city's socio-economic progress by providing a secure location for ferries to anchor while not in operation.
“The project will help grow industries such as manufacturing, logistics, and transportation, attract business investments, and create jobs,” he said.
Quinale Cabasan Barangay Captain Elmer Yu Gascon said before the construction of the seawall, nearby residents would have to evacuate in times of calamities.
"Nakatulong ang proyektong ito dahil hindi na pumapasok ang tubig sa mga kabahayan lalo na tuwing masama ang panahon (This project helped because the waters no longer enters houses, especially during bad weather),” Gascon said.
He said the project also provides recreational space for friends and families, especially at night.
"Ang aming barangay ay nag-aalok na din ng magandang tanawin, ang mini park. Mas naging responsible din ang mga residente na panatilihing malinis ng paligid (Our barangay also offers a beautiful view, the mini park. The residents have also become more responsible to keep the surroundings clean)," Gascon said.
He added that the project gives a venue for small businesses among his constituents.
The structure also serves locals with a two-lane coastal road with sidewalks on both sides, a mini-park, a docking area for safe and efficient boarding and disembarking of passengers, as well as the provision of solar-powered streetlights for road security and nighttime visibility. (PNA)
