MANILA – The Department of Science and Technology in the Ilocos Region I (DOST-I) has distributed 50 units of portable solar dryer or portasol to farmers in Ilocos Sur province.

"We purchased the 50 units as requested by Representative [Ronald] Singson who identified the beneficiaries in partnership with the local government unit," DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. told the Philippine News Agency on Tuesday.

The technology was developed by Filipino inventor, Popoy Pagayon, who was also supported by the DOST, he added.

The multi-purpose drying trays benefited 34 farmers in the municipalities of San Juan and Cabugao.

"This initiative aims for farmers and fishermen of Ilocos Sur to improve the quality of their products. With the help of this innovation, they may manufacture sterilized, hygienic dried goods with reduced drying losses, allowing for an increase in productivity and quicker drying times," Solidum said.

Portasol will also help minimize contamination among high-value crops, he said. (PNA)
